finding information beyond the wghs library collection
How to effectively search Google
How to effectively search google scholar - especially for senior students
Using boolean logic operators in your online searching
In your searches you can use Boolean Logic Operators (AND, OR, NOT) to refine your information search. You will need to use capital letters.
OR - retrieves records that contain all the search terms that you enter
AND - retrieves records that contain both search terms and therefore narrows the search.
OR - retrieves records that contain all the search terms that you enter

adapting blooms taxonomy in the research process
Benjamin Bloom is an educational psychologist who developed a classification of levels of intellectual behaviour important in learning. Bloom identified six levels. These six levels are listed below. You can use the concepts of Bloom’s taxonomy as a way to approach your research. Work through the questions below and you will be working through increasing cognitive levels.

1. KNOWLEDGE
Key words could be: arrange, define, duplicate, label, list, memorize, name, order, recognize, relate, recall, repeat, reproduce, state.
- What do I know or recall about the subject matter?
- How can I arrange my knowledge?
- How can I define the terminology used?
2. COMPREHENSION
Key words could be: classify, describe, discuss, explain, express, identify, indicate, locate, recognize, report, restate, review, select, translate.
- Can I explain or express clearly what I need to do for this task?
- Can I identify what I will need to do or investigate to complete this task?
- What do I need to review before starting the task?
3. APPLICATION
Key words could be: apply, choose, demonstrate, dramatize, employ, illustrate, interpret, operate, practice, schedule, sketch, solve, use, write.
- How do I interpret the question?
- Are there alternative ways to interpret the task?
- What can I use to illustrate my argument or ideas?
4. ANALYSIS
Key words could be: analyze, appraise, calculate, categorize, compare, contrast, criticize, differentiate, discriminate, distinguish, examine, experiment, question, test.
- How can I examine this subject matter?
- What questions do I need to explore or differentiate between?
- Can I compare or contrast differing viewpoints?
5. SYNTHESIS
Key words could be: arrange, assemble, collect, compose, construct, create, design, develop, formulate, manage, organize, plan, prepare, propose, set up, write.
- How can I arrange or organise my thoughts on the subject matter?
- What point of view can I propose or put forward?
- What style of writing is appropriate?
6. EVALUATION
Key words could be: appraise, argue, assess, attach, choose, compare, defend, estimate, judge, predict, rate, core, select, support, value, evaluate.
- What is my core argument or appraisal?
- How have I supported or justified my position?
- Have I approached the task with sufficient depth and value?
